Overview

About Darjeeling

Darjeeling sits on a long ridge above the Rangeet and Teesta valleys, and on a clear morning the Kanchenjunga massif fills the northern horizon. It is the town most travellers picture when they think of the Eastern Himalaya: colonial-era buildings, steep lanes, monasteries, and tea estates running down the hillsides.

It also works well as a first stop. The town is compact enough to explore on foot, the sightseeing is spread over short drives rather than long ones, and it connects easily onward to Kalimpong, Mirik, Sikkim or the Dooars.

Top attractions

01

Tiger Hill sunrise

An early start for first light on the Kanchenjunga range. Visibility depends entirely on the weather that morning.

02

Darjeeling Himalayan Railway

The narrow-gauge line inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Joy ride timings and availability change through the year.

03

Batasia Loop

The spiral where the toy train turns back on itself, alongside the Gorkha war memorial garden.

One of the oldest gardens around the town, with a walk through the plucking slopes.

The high-altitude zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute museum share one campus.

June to September

Heavy monsoon rain. Hill roads can be affected, so plans need flexibility.
