Sikkim's hill capital, monasteries and high alpine lakes
Gangtok is the most comfortable base in Sikkim. The centre is built around M.G. Marg, a pedestrian-only promenade where no vehicles or smoking are allowed, and the city climbs the ridge above it in tiers of hotels, monasteries and viewpoints.
Most travellers use Gangtok for two things: a relaxed day in the city itself, and the high-altitude excursion east towards Tsomgo Lake and Nathula. It also pairs naturally with Darjeeling on a single trip.
