About North Sikkim

North Sikkim is the most dramatic part of the state and the part that needs the most planning. Roads climb from subtropical river valleys to alpine meadows in a single day, and the two overnight bases - Lachung and Lachen - are simple mountain villages rather than towns.

Because the region sits close to the border, travel here runs on a Protected Area Permit, registered vehicles and local operators. Road and weather conditions decide what is reachable on any given day, so itineraries are always planned with an alternative.

Top attractions

01

Yumthang Valley

The wide grazing valley below Lachung, often called the Valley of Flowers for its spring rhododendrons.

02

Zero Point (Yume Samdong)

The last civilian point on the road above Yumthang, at roughly 4,600 m. Access is seasonal.

03

Gurudongmar Lake

A sacred high-altitude lake near Lachen at around 5,400 m. Subject to permits, weather and health considerations.

04

Chopta Valley

A quiet alpine valley on the Lachen side, often paired with the Gurudongmar run.

05

Lachung & Lachen villages

Overnight stops with old monasteries, wooden houses and very early morning departures.

Best time to visit

March to June

Rhododendron season in Yumthang and the most dependable window for the higher points.

October to November

Clear, cold and excellent for photography before the winter closures.

Monsoon & deep winter

Landslides and snow regularly close sections of the road. Plans need buffer days.

How to reach North Sikkim

  • All North Sikkim trips start from Gangtok, which is the permit and vehicle base.
  • Lachung is roughly six hours from Gangtok; Lachen is a similar drive on the parallel valley.
  • A Protected Area Permit is mandatory and is applied for with ID documents before departure.

Good to know. High-altitude travel is weather dependent. Access to Zero Point and Gurudongmar Lake is never guaranteed and is decided by the local administration on the day.
