The old Silk Route through East Sikkim is a driving trip more than a sightseeing one. The road climbs in tight hairpin loops from the Rongli valley to well above 12,000 ft, and the accommodation is mostly village homestays. It is not a luxury itinerary - it is a spectacular one, and it suits travellers who are comfortable with simple stays and long days in a vehicle.
Drive via Rongli, where permits are processed, and climb to Zuluk in the late afternoon. Rest early - the altitude is significant.
